Women as Portrayed in Orientalist Painting Lynne Thornton If you like Orientalist art, this is a FABULOUS book! It's a small format paperback, but just packed cover to cover with paintings of Mid-Eastern people, dancers, odalisques, harems, and Turkish bath nudes. You will recognize many of these dancer paintings, but there were lots I'd never seen before. |

Delacroix in Morocco Published as a catalog of works for an exhibit by the Institut du Monde Arabe. A coffee table book of the artwork of Eugene Delacroix done while he was in Morocco in the 1830's and 1840's. Includes a great many working sketches, paintings (oil and watercolor) and notes from Delacroix's experiences. The text is well written and informative. Beautifully printed on heavy stock - a really fine book for anyone interested in Orientalist art. |

Orientalism - History, theory and the arts John M. MacKenzie An essay in cultural history. This book looks at the ideas surrounding Orientalism - the portrayal of the East by artists, musicians and writers of the West, and it's resulting effects on western culture. A somewhat scholarly work, not light reading, but lots of information by a historian of imperialism. |
