Virgins of Paradise Barbara Wood also on Cassette "I've recently finished reading a marvelous book called 'Virgins of Paradise' by Barbara Wood. It's the story of a group of women from one household over the period of about 40 years, from King Farouk through to Mubarak. One of the women who is banished ends up 'disgracing' the family as a, yes, you guessed it, a dancer. Its a lovely book, well written well researched." - Ruth |

Skinny Legs and All Tom Robbins If you like Tom Robbins, you'll love this... If you've never read Tom Robbins, you'll wonder what they slipped into your drink.... Tom's style is not for everyone, but I love his rich, textural, very offbeat way of weaving a story. One of the pivotal characters is a young belly dancer. The other major characters are an Arab, a Jew, a welder and her (!) husband the artist, and... a can of beans, a conch shell, a painted stick, and a dirty sock. Reader's Review: Somewhere I read that Tom Robbins' work has been compared to a good acid trip. When you start, everything is a little strange (and getting stranger). Inanimate objects become protagonists and reality subsides into a thick haze of enlightened confusion. Suddenly, you reach a euphoric crescendo and shake hands with Buddha as you are overcome with insight. Then of course, from that day on, nothing ever looks the same. I have read all of this lovely man's books many times and it has always been my conviction that Skinny Legs and All is the most potent. |
