Etchings & Photos

Greetings All!

This is a gallery of some old photos, paintings and etchings I've collected - dancers, traditional costumes, pictures from the 1893 Worlds Fair, things Arabic and things Orientalist. Many of these are prints from old travel magazines (published over 100 years ago) and I was fortunate enough to come across a collector with original copies! Sadly, the magazines had been broken down and the pictures clipped out, so the text info and captions were lost on some of them. I've included the associated text for any that have it. If you can identify or provide more info on any of these, e-mail me and I'll update the text!

Included here are the works of some Orientalist painters - western artists depicting the Middle East, if not entirely authentically, at least with a sense of it's exotic richness. There are also photos and movie posters from Hollywood's stylized and rather cliche view of the Orient... including dolls and figures with exotic incarnations. There are some works regarding Spanish, Flamenco or East Indian dancers. Finally, there are pin-ups from the early 1900s through the 1950's. While these are not all related to the Middle East, many of them retain the sense of feminine mystery that is so much a part of Mid-Eastern dancing.

I've added sections for Egyptian Dancers, other unidentified dancers, and Salome, Little Egypt and all their Oriental-inspired friends. There is also a section for turn of the century Orientalist and French postcards.

Click on any picture to see the full size version and the text (if any) that accompanied it. And do check back - I've got lots more to get scanned and posted!
