Peggy Both: This gentleman appears to me (a Balkan specialist) to be in costume of the Shopluk (=Shope ethnic area of western Bulgaria, eastern Macedonia, & southeastern Serbia). In particular, the district of Sofia is indicated by the distinctive tight-sleeved jacket, which persists to this day in the standardized folk costume of that area, now usually in a bright blue or black wool. The leather sandals (tsurvuli) are typical central Balkan footgear. The facial hair is also in a common style for turn-of-the-century there; compare, for example, the portrait photo of the Macedonian revolutionary Pitu Guli. The fleece hat is also quite characteristic of the entire Balkan region.

Can you identify the costume / nationality of these pictures? If so, e-mail me!
