Q: Where can I find dancers, dancing, and costumes in mainstream movies? A: Aziza Sa'id: Here's a fairly complete list...
For my money, one of the most notable "eastern-style" (although not necessarily "belly") dances in the movies is in Casino Royale, the 1967 James Bond film with the many 007s (David Niven, Woody Allen, Peter Sellers, and more). There's a scene where Sir James (Niven) goes to meet his daughter, Mata Bond (Joanna Pettet[sp?]). He's taken to a room where, suddenly, this huge, Busby Berkeley-style Middle Eastern/Indian/Fantasy fusion song and dance takes place. Loads of veils, large headdresses, lots of makeup, neat costumes. I give it two finger cymbals, although--I gotta admit--I still shake my head with a "what was THAT?" whenever I see it! - Talibah Lucy Liu, In the recent Charlie's Angels movie there's one scene where Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz appear in a restaurant, dancing to distract one of the men in the audience, so that Drew Barrymore can sneak up behind him steal his glass, because they need to get his fingerprints. I don't really remember what they were wearing but I remember thinking that it was a lot of arm waving and not much more. -- Beth Asianconnections.com posted an interview with Lucy Liu recently. When the scene comes up, her reply was "I like to belly dance. I don't know what I'm doing. I think that's all I can say, anymore." Then of course there's that queen of camp classics, "Cleopatra" starring Liz Taylor. That movie probably single-handedly did the most damage to the image of the ancient Middle East of any piece of cinema in history. Polyester linens, gold tinfoil, and all. -- Dina

Casablanca
This may not count as an official dancer siting, but in "Casablanca" the shadow of an undulating Med dancer is seen on the walls of Signor Ferrari's "Blue Parrot". Whether or not that was intended as a left-handed commentary on the seediness of "The Blue Parrot" vs. Rick's squeaky-clean Cafe Americain is not known of course. - Paul B

Julianne Moore plays a rather meek woman who, among other things in this movie, is acting (badly) in a local play - as Salome. She does a rather bad and cheezy bellydance veil sorta thing - I suspect Ms Moore could do better, but her performance was right on for her character...
