Q: Where can I find dancers, dancing, and costumes in mainstream movies? A: Aziza Sa'id: Here's a fairly complete list...
From the Internet Movie Database: Directed by a woman (!) in 1940 (!) and written by a team of two women and a man, "Dance, Girl, Dance" tackles a central plot explored later in "Flashdance" and "Dance With Me" (also directed by a woman, Randa Haines) - the serious dancer struggling for identity in a cheap, commercialized world. Artistic dancer Judy is forced to sleaze it up as a stripper to earn a living. But she refuses to sacrifice either her dignity or her dreams. Lucy's a hoot as a whore in a rare big-screen appearance before her TV show. And Maria Ouspenskaya of the Chaney Jr. werewolf pics is hysterical as Judy's ballet teacher. Just wondered if anyone saw the David and Bathsheba movie last night starring Gregory Peck and Susan Hayworth? How about the scene when David finds out that Bathsheba is pregnant with his child although she is married to Urias(sp?) What does he do? Make arrangements for Urias to be taken out of battle to come home and be with his wife so they can make him think the baby would be his, sparing Bathsheba the death of a thousand stones. Hearing that Urias is not much of a lover, David sends for a dancer to heat him up so that he can be sure he will lay with Bathsheba that night. Along with wine, a frantic, jerky bellydancer trys to make the ole boy worked up sexually. Hollywood has done it again!! And we wonder why the stereotype rides again, and again, and again. -- Farhana Masri According to the Internet Movie Database (http://us.imdb.com/search.html), the gypsy in "From Russia with Love" was Martine Beswick (Zora the gypsy) and she also danced in the opening credits of Dr. No (1962). -- Jerry To add to the movie list, my student told me about "Dream Wife" with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.I haven't seen it myself yet. It supposedly has bona fide dancing in it. -- Zemyna German movie somewhere in an arabian restaurant there is a belly dancer -- Stephanie

Lucille Ball
Lucy, as Bubbles (aka Tiger Lily White...) is one of a bunch of girl entertainers in a talent agent's stable - they dance whatever the client needs - regardless if they know the dance or not... in one case, the client is looking for a hula dancer "...with that special something..." After reviewing a number of girls, and not finding it, the put Lucy on to do the bit... and she has that "something", which turns out to be a burlesque bump and grind... Actually not a bad film, but not a great hula... Also Stars Maureen O'Hara

Dangerous Beauty
(1998) About a courtesan in 16th c. Venice, there are two scenes with a dancer in the background. In one scene the dancer looks clearly to be doing some sort of MED; in the other scene, it looks a bit more on the "exotic" side, if you know what I mean.

For example - in Deathstalker II, the outfit Gabrielle what's-her-face - the porn queen doing a bad swords 'n sorcery flick - wore inspired me to make one fairly similar to it. Of course, I didn't have quite the cleavage she did. ;) - Frenchy
