Q: Where can I find dancers, dancing, and costumes in mainstream movies? A: Aziza Sa'id: Here's a fairly complete list...
Gadjo Dilo is the new movie by Tony Gatlif, the director of Latcho Drom. It shows a bit of the everyday life of the Romes (Gypsies) in Romania. The music and dance are wonderful. It's a must see. -- Aparecida. For those who are interested there is also some very casual dancing in Gadjo Dilo - this film is not about the dance but rather about one man's quest to find a specific singer/song. This film may be a bit harder to find since I doubt Blockbuster will carry an unedited copy of this one (too much "vulgar language", nudity, etc.,). It is wonderful--vulgar and crude, poetic and romantic, grittily realistic, tragic, funny... great film. With some good clips of dancing in a nightclub! -- athan There is priceless footage of a belly dancer in full costume dancing next to a Roman woman in street clothes. EXCELLENT examples of Asia Minor style music and dance in this movie (even though it takes place in Eastern Europe). It is a *must see* for any serious student of Asia Minor style. You said: >>I heard that "Gadjo Dilo" means "stupid, non-Romany man"; << OK, I am no linguist, but the notes from the interview with Tony Gatlin translate the title as Gadjo = non-gypsy (like goy is non-jewish); Dilo = crazy; - Natasya K Olga Lunick

Description
Gadjo Dilo
The new movie by the director of "Latcho Drom." (Sorry, I don't have his name available.) This movie seems to have been made in 1997; I assume this was its U.S. premier. The film, which takes place largely in a Gypsy village in Romania, is about young French traveler searching for a Gypsy singer that his father had liked. During the course of the film, the protagonists go to a nightclub in Bucharest. There we see a belly dancer doing her routine to what I think is Romanian Gypsy music. The dancer, IMHO, was great. I have no idea who she was. She definitely was dancing in a Turkish style. What's more, her dance was "featured," as opposed to being just background to the action surrounding her. I suspect this movie will go in to general distribution. It's totally delightful and rang true to me, based on what I read in the book "Bury Me Standing." If nothing else, there's a great tune, "Tutti Frutti," and wonderful dancing by the lead actress and this unnamed belly dancer.
Gambit
Aisha Ali, AMAN Folk Ensemble
(Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine, 1966) was on Bravo last night and there was about 30 sec. of women dressed like the Ouled Nail, ululating. Then they showed 2 women holding hands and leaning WAY back and doing amazing hip flicks. I don't know about that scene, but Aisha Ali is featured in another scene in that movie. There's a smoky middle-eastern restaurant, and you get a few shots of Aisha dancing in the middle. The dancers in the film Gambit were from the AMAN Folk Ensemble, right here in Hollywood, LA! I am sure they would be pleased to know they passed through Auntie Rocky's BS meter! I'm not surprised, though when I first saw this film & contacted the studio to try & trace the dancers, I was told by their P.R. department that the dancers were "real" Ouled Nail & that some scenes were filmed in Algeria. The particular move that the women did was accurate, but what the men were doing had no relation, country-wise & the women's costumes were far too uniform & that made me suspicious. I asked about that & was told that they had purposely made uniform costumes, so that it would look more professional & be less distracting, costume-wise (totally logical by Hollywood standards) & "imported" some men "from another area" to "fill out the scene" & that lots more had been shot, but not included.......
Garden of Allah, The
I recently watched this movie from 1936, featuring Marlene Dietrich and Charles Boyer. It included a couple of dance scenes. One was a group dance, but it showed very little dancing---just very brief shots of shoulders and arms. The other was a soloist. The main thing I remember about the solo was a very nice (in character) backbend. -- Farida
Girl from S.I.N., The
Joyana
Glass Bottom Boat, The
Doris Day
Doris Day does a surprisingly sexy turn as Mata Hari in a dream sequence. Her killer curves are almost matched by a killer accent -- Paul B
Gold Of The Amazon Women
1981 made for tv movie (which is schlock city) a "native girl" does what I suppose could be called bellydance for Bo Svenson. It would compliment the movie, the dance, the acting, the writing & the story too much to call it "preposterous". You heard of "B" movies? Give this one a D- -- Paul B
Golden Blade, The
Dorinda Clifton,
Hollywood costume extravaganza - Arabian Nights meets The Sword in the Stone, plenty of glitzy costumes and sets, Rock Hudson, Piper Laurie.A nice long scene Chinese magician produces a dancer out of a sword-thru-the-girl-in-the-box trick. She does some very slinky and nicely executed stuff sorta like belly dancing to entice a rather drunk Rock Hudson - Aziza Sa'id
Golden Earrings
Marlene Dietrich, Ray Milland. Marlene Dietrich as a gypsy giving refuge to British agent Ray Milland during WWII.Ray: "if you don't stop that, I'll hit you with this whip!" Marlene: "You'd DO that for ME?" Classic Hollywood gypsy at it's best
Golden Mask, The
Samia Hakim
With Van Heflin. In another oldie from the1950s, from Hollywood, Algerian dancer Samia Hakim appears with quite a long excellent, authentic dance sequence, and is given credit at the end in the following way: "Oriental Dance Sequence by Samia Hakim." . -- Cartesio
Golden Voyage of Sinbad, The
Leila (Lisa Guiraut)
starring Caroline Munro as a slave girl!
Goofballs
featuring a belly dancer who doesn't dance
Gor
Based loosely on John Norman's macho-man series (all Earth women have whimped out earth men and are dying to be captured by Real Men and become naked sex slaves for eternity on planet Gor) has harem girl costumes galore. -- Amira
Greatest Story Ever Told, The
The (1965) Shows Herodias' daughter dressed sort of like a bellydancer and doing a half-hearted, atrocious attempt at something vaguely resembling bellydancing. She looks like a robot -- she must've been the director's niece or something.
Good Neighbor Sam
Zanouba
(1964)
