Q: Where can I find dancers, dancing, and costumes in mainstream movies? A: Aziza Sa'id: Here's a fairly complete list...

# A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R Sa Si T U V W X Y Z

Movie Title Dancer Description
Sign of the Gladiator Chelo Alonso
Sinbad    1950's Vincent Price
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger Jane Seymour Patric Wayne, Jane Seymour -  nice costume, bad dancing
Sinbad the Sailor    Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Maureen O'Hara
Siren of Bagdad    (1953)
Sketches of a Strangler    (1978)
Slave Girl    Yvonne De Carlo
Snake People, The Tongolele (1968) Boris Karloff, a BAD movie
Soddom and Gamorrah Mitsuko Takara Stewart Granger, Pier Angeli A Biblical epic of course, made in the early 1960s. Anouk Aimee plays the cool and evil Queen, Stewart Granger plays a rather stiff "Lot". The movie has three dance scenes. The first is a tacky groin grinder. Kind of funny. The second, features a chorus of dancers in "savage" shorty skirt costumes, kind of furry, and tacky dancing. The "star" dancer of this number is a beautiful young Asian woman, who is perhaps Chinese or Japanese, and is not listed in the credits. She can actually dance! and is very fluid and not so tacky, tho she does the dance with the chorus. Lovely white and silver costume. Does anyone have a clue who she is? The last dance number is a stiff duet of some kind. Two women, one dressed as a man I think.....the camera shoots off to the sidelines too often to get the whole jist of it. The movie is full of fantasy costumes, gorgeous horseflesh, slaves of every description, cruelty, and primitive special effects . A hoot on a rainy day. I think you know the story line. ;-) Keep your finger poised over fast forward....
Solomon and Sheba

(1959) Brynner and Lollobrigida Director: King Vidor

A Hollywood spectacular about the famed reign of King Solomon over ancient Israel. The voluptuous Queen of Sheba plots his overthrow. Splashy spectacle with alluring Gina and stoic Brynner frolicking in biblical days. Tyrone Power died during filming in Spain, was replaced by Brynner who refilmed his early scenes. Some long shots still show Power, not Brynner. Vidor's final film as director. Restored to 139m. on laserdisc. Super Technirama 70. Copyright© Leonard Maltin, 1998, used by arrangement with Signet, a division of Penguin Putnam, Inc.

Some Kind Of Nut Angie Dickinson (1969) This terrible, terrible pic has a good dancer in it; better yet, Angie Dickinson also does a taxim (I'm a sucker for her as it is, and she also is a pretty decent dancer.)
Something Wicked This Way Comes     A horror-fantasy Ray Bradbury tale called "Something Wicked This Way Comes." That "wicked" thing is Mr. Dark's Carnival, which has the power to make dreams come true - for a price. One New England town resident, who dreams of "ladies", enters the carnival & finds himself surrounded by belly dancers in one of the tents. The price he pays for this euphoria is to be transformed into a circus-style Bearded Lady himself, condemned to join the carnival! Weird- huh? By the way, the wonderful actor, Jonathan Pryce (who does all those Infiniti car commercials) starred as Mr. Dark.
Son of Ali Baba Milada Mladova Piper Laurie, Tony Curtis.   More Hollywood costume extravaganza, great costumes and sets.Very odd dance by "Zaza from Cairo". Milada Mladova is credited in her bio as a Ballet Dancer
Son of Ali Baba     (1954) English Subtitle Ali Baba accidentally discovers the magic cave where Abdul and his band of 40 thieves hide their ill-gotten treasure. He takes enough to buy the beautiful slave girl Morgiane from his master, Cassim, so that he may take her as his wife. However, Kassim and Abdul have plans for Ali on his wedding night...
Son of Sinbad Nejla Ates

Kalantan

(U.S., 1955) starring Vincent Price, featuring belly pole dancing

Nejla Ates as Dancer in market. Kalantan as Dancer in desert

Son of the Pink Panther     (1993) Features a lengthy dance sequence. Blake Edwards (the director of this pic as well as "Wine And Roses" and "Return Of the Pink Panther") likes featuring bellydance in his pix. And for good reason.

And the possibly worst (beats even Charlie's Angels, honestly) "Son of the Pink Panther". Even Roberto Benigni couldn't save it. Bad dialogue, incredibly insulting to just about every ethnic group, TERRIBLE costumes, and a horrific Middle Eastern nightclub where dancers in cheap cabaret bedlah are lounging all over the place. - Gwyn

Yes Gwyn, I agree that the "son of the pink panther", which 2 months ago I had the unlucky idea to rent, is really horrific in its stupidity and bad taste (and Roberto Benigni seems only an idiot there). - Tanja

Son of Sampson Chelo Alonso
Son of the Sheik

(1926) silent, Rudoph Valentino, Vilma Banky
Spy Who Loved Me, The     There's a lengthy scene in an Egyptian restaurant (007 bidding for microfilm, guy with microfilm gets offed by the guy with metal teeth) and in the background there are about five dancers performing various types (I think) of what we call trance dancing. Two are doing the whirling dervish thang, a third in the centre is on her knees tossing her head around. What was surprising about this is that they are wearing pretty traditional costume, as oppesed to what one would expect to find in a Bond flick, you know, good excuse to have a woman wearing cabaret cossie on stage (there are three ladies wearing this, but they don't dance).

featuring Dawn Rodrigues and ? as harem girls!

Spy with a Cold Nose, The Nai Bonet (1966) spy spoof
SSSSSSS Bobbi Kiger (1973) Bobbi Kiger as a Kootch Dancer
Stasera a Casa di Alice     (This Evening at Alice's House) Italy 1990. This movie is done upon a known American comedy "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (1974)
Stage Struck     Gloria Swanson
Star Wars     Star Wars ---Princess Leia in a belly dance "uniform" as someone said to me...and that's when i realized audiences define a belly dancer not by her dancing skills but if she wears our "uniform" LOL! -- Amira
Stasera a casa di Alice     This last Saturday I rented a VHS movie and well... it came out unexpected to me a brief but delicious scene of bellydance. The title is "Stasera a casa di Alice" (this evening at Alice's house), Italy 1990. BTW this movie is done upon a known American comedy titled something like "Alice doesn't live here anymore". The dancer dances at a sort of rave party in Alice's eclectic house. -- Tanja
Steam     (Also released as "Hamam" and "The Turkish Bath") This carefully paced and beautifully filmed drama explores the culture clash from the perspective of a turkish italian who returns to his homeland to sell the bathhouse he's inherited and discovers romance and a lifestyle far preferable to the one he left in Italy. made in 1996 directed by Ferzan Ozpetek, subtitled -- Ruth

Absolutely Remarkable Music -- Aziza Sa'id

Soundtrack to Steam

Story of Ruth, The     There are no belly dancers, but there is a harvest scene in which the village gets together to celebrate the harvest, and there is a sort of threshing dance with folkloric overtones, which might be of interest to some of the visitors on your web site. -- Vicki Hale
Streetfighter
Strip-Tease Murder Case     (1950) featuring actual strippers: Eunice Jason, Denise Darnell, Naomi, Alberta, Lynn Sherwood
