What to do if you can't dance

Bernadette: A pregnancy in which physical activity is restricted is a good time to learn zills... or to improve drumming technique... it's not active dancing, but it keeps the connection...

Cathy: Pregnancy is a good time to catch up on general mending and maintenance of costumes and props. Especially in the first few months after bub is born, you may have less opportunity or inclination to do these tasks. Also, if you take 9-12 months off using some costumes and props, they still may deteriorate and it would be nice to have as much prepared as you can.

For instance, getting a hair-piece serviced (if you wear one), resewing the elastics on zills, checking all the clips and clasps on costumes, etc. can save you time later when you'd rather be attending to the new addition.

Also, it can be a good time to update showtapes, etc., as your usual tapes may seem tired after being on the shelf for some months.

Kathy: Buy tapes of dancers you might gain inspiration from. Nadia Gamal and Amani are two captivating performers. I keep myself motivated this way. It's important to anticipate the day when you will have your stamina back and can participate fully in this exquisite dance. Go to the various internet dance sites.

When your energy level permits, go to Arabic restaurants to see dancers perform live. Go to haflas. It's a bit wrenching to have to remain seated when your heart leaps to dance, but it works to keep inspiration alive! Use this downtime from actively dancing to read books on the subject (see Morocco's suggested reading list on her website).
