Here's a short list of the moves I usually teach beginners, not necessarily in this order:

• Circles (hips or ribs, many kinds)
• Figure 8s (hips, many kinds)
• Camels (full body)
• Shimmies (hips and shoulders)
• 3-Step turn and pivot
• Traveling steps (walks, chasses, step lift)
• Isolations (hips, ribs, full body)
• Pelvic drop
• Hip hits (weight on moving hip, many styles)
• Hip lifts and drops (weight on standing hip, many styles)
• Slow speed 3/4 shimmies
• Arm and hand movements
• Simple veil work
• Lots of different stretches to prevent injury and lengthen muscles
• Basic rhythms
• Understanding of basic styles
• Understanding of basic culture
• Understanding of basic performance skills
• Understanding of how to behave in class
• Understanding of how to behave in dance venues

Of course, I don't expect students to master all this in a 6-week course, and depending on the group of students we might not get through all of this.
