George Abdo

My favorite Arabic musician from the '70s. Wow, what a voice! Old, but very wonderful! All George's stuff is easily enjoyed by those not yet acquainted with heavier Mid-Eastern music. Wonderful for beginning students and western audiences. Very classic, beautiful music. After 22 years, I still use these.

Belly Dancing with George Abdo

TAPE - this one has my all time favorite song Lila on it... that song is the reason I became a dancer... For a CD of this, try Audrena

Art Of Belly Dancing

Excellent stuff here! I still use this (after 20 years!)

More excellent stuff!

Magic Of Belly Dancing

My least favorite of the Abdo works, all the songs have a very similar feel, not a lot of variety.

Desert Wind

Alan Scott Bachman, Doug Adams and many other musicians...

From the notes on Christmas: Rhythms of the Holy Land: Desert Wind is an extracurricular activity of Alan Scott Bachman, Utah'sAssistant Attorney General. You wouldn't know it from the picture in the CD, he looks just like any other guy you'd find in a drum circle - except here plays nine instruments (Boston Steinway Grand Piano, mandolins, mandola, mandocello, acoustic guitars, alto recorder, harpsichord, keyboards, sleigh bells, and oriental bells.) Not that Desert Wind is a one-man project. Eight other musicians playing 16 more instruments mostly percussion) perform ten different Middle East rhythms (Ready for another list? Beladi, Ayoub, Masmoudi, Bolero, Khaleegy, Maqsoum, Saidi, Mid-East and Persian 6/8, Rock-Beladi.) on Christmas: Rhythms of the Holy Land. The exotic rhythms infuse the standards with new energy, making this one of the more interesting holiday releases.

Farabi

Review by Amanda Baer: A wide range of musical styles -- Arabic, Armenian, Turkish, Greek, Persian -- makes for a fascinating collection of tunes, all of which the musicians deliver with ease and authenticity. The performances are top notch (although the sound quality varies on a few tracks). Any dancer who likes Turkish 9/8 will love the most dynamic version of "Sulu Kule" I have heard. Great taqsims/solos, too!

The music has an intimate, coffee-house sound, performed by first rate musicians (NO synthesizers!). Vivacious, evocative, fun stuff!

Farah Dance Orchestra

Exotic Belly Dance

Some good stuff with traditional instrumentation. Nice versions of Ali Bali, Sali, Ya Mit Massa, Fayek Lamkinna. Some with a very Turkish sound (Rompi Rompi 9/8), a couple of Greek songs also. Two nice Debkes. A few not too useable ones, but overall a surprisingly good selection and fairly good quality recordings. Some of these have the thinner sound typical of older recordings.

Best of Belly Dance from Egypt and Lebanon

A sampling of works from Hossam Ramzy, Emad Sayyah, others... good stuff from the best in the business... Excellent!

Best of Belly Dance from Egypt, Lebanon, Arabia and Turkey

Another set of collected works - haven't heard this one but it should be excellent.

Emad Sayyah and others

Review by Pantherboy: These discs got bashed (individually) on Amazon for not being authentic. I would disagree - the music is very authentic, and, yes, they have limited fidelity which should be your FIRST clue that they ARE authentic. The female singer is not one of the best (her range is limited) but the music is very enjoyable. Listen to the sound samples, and you'll get the idea. I think this is a good deal for the money.

Best Of Bellydance From Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon & Turkey

Performers include: Hassam Ramzy, Emad Sayyah, Chalf Hassan, Mostafa Sax. I haven't heard this, but based on the roster, it should be wonderful.

Sif Safaa: New Music From The Middle East

Music by Hamdi Ahmed, Saleh Khairy, Kazim Al Sahir, Hanan, Aida Ayubi, Mohamed Mounir, Mohamed Fouad, Abu Hilal, Saleh Khairy

Oooo there's wonderful stuff on here!!!

Review by Simone Gasser: The full title of this album is "The Belly Dance Album in the World - Ever"! Now, that's quite something.... This CD was put together in cooperation with the famous Lebanese dancer Amani who appears on the cover and for whom one of the pieces was written. There are two kinds of music on the CD: Old, all time favourites and new composition. Of course, you can never go wrong with those old pieces. Most are Arabic, one is Turkish. As for the new ones, some of them sound a bit too "western" for me. I like Arabic music to be, well, Arabic. All in all it's a nice album that gives a good overview of very different styles and interpretations of music for oriental dance.

1. Noura Noura - Farid El Atrache
2. Haramt Ahibbak - Warda
3. Anta Oumri - Oum Kalsoum
4. Habbina Habbina - Farid El Atrache

7. Yassmin - Ihsan Al Munzer
8. Adawar - Mohamed Matar

Yalla! Hitlist Egypt

Selections of current (1990) Al Jeel ("the generation") and the Shaabi (working class "people's") music. Al Jeel is an energetic pop combination of Bedouin, Nubian and Egyptian rhythms using modern instrumentation. Shaabi is a more traditional fusion of city and country sounds, a sort of ghetto blues with heavier social commentary. This is not specifically for dancing and includes several songs with strong political commentary that shouldn't be danced to. There are some fun Arabic pop and an Arabic rap song (cool!) that are very nice and danceable! Excellent liner notes.

Other Bellydance Artists

Ok, so the name's tacky. Actually, the music's pretty good. Both male and female vocals with the thinner sound found in some older recordings. Clear quality. Very nice version of Chataaraban - Samai (classical 10/8 rhythm).

Music from the Cheap Seats....

I don't know much about some of these... they look interesting, but I don't have most of them. There are comments on the one's I've heard. NOTICE: some of these are collections of other, older works, things you may already have. Some are misrepresented as Belly Dance Music even though they're not... There are occasional gems on these kind of CDs... but...

Authentic Belly Dance Music

Actually, the title is a lie... this is Macedonian music from the Skopia region... Good Romani (Gypsy) music by "Gypsy Esma" Esma Redzhepova but not as advertised...

Music info thanks to Mona N'wal

All The Best Of Belly Dancing

25 songs - the first 12 are the same as Authentic Belly Dance (not! Try Romani...) but the rest are mid-eastern probably Mohammed Al Bakkar. Rather poor quality recordings...

Music for an Arabian Night

Ron Goodwin & his Orchestra

The big western orchestra version of Arabic and Greek melodies. Some pretty stuff here, but mostly in the genre of '101 Strings' and Martin Denny. Some nice rhumbas and some Greek sound. My first teacher used these for warm ups and I still love their sound.
