Rhythm Classes with Osama El-Gohary

Hi,
Before starting the 3rd lesson I'd like to ask 2 questions?
1) Did you find a metronome yet? If not, I'm sure you will not get any benefit from this lesson, so if you are serious about learning, you should find one. In the original emails I couldn't attach any photos because of the list policy, so we only had one way to communicate and it took me a lot of thinking to find this way. Aziza has added pictures here on the web page, so that will help.
2) Did you practice the exercises of the 2nd lesson? If is not then go back and practice the 2nd lesson exercises first, because skipping any exercises could cause a misunderstanding, its very important to practice lesson by lesson... Exercise arrangement is very important.
Do you remember? We said that there is a name for each different speed that a note can be played at. Notes played at one note per beat are called quarter note and that is what the exercises of the 2nd lesson were about, so you have been practicing only this type of note.
You were practicing in the 2nd lesson how to play a quarter note using your voice, because you were playing a one note with each metronome's click.
In this lesson we will practice the "eighth notes". Can you imagine how many notes you will play per beat? ..........................Think ...........
Right, 2 notes will be played per beat.
So now turn your metronome on.
5th Exercise
You will repeat with each click the numbers "1, 2"... be sure that you split each click time between the two numbers equally.
| Metronome: |
click
click
click
click
...
You:
one two
one two
one two
one two
...

You will need 4 minutes practicing this one.
6th Exercise
You will repeat with each click this time 2 taks and be sure that you don't let any space between the two taks. Also is very important to split the time of each click equally for each tak.
Be sure that you are saying 2 taks in the time of one click "beat".
| Metronome: |
click
click
click
click
...
You:
tak tak
tak tak
tak tak
tak tak
...

Practice this exercise for 4 minutes too.
7th Exercise
Repeat with each click 2 doms , also be sure that you don't let any space between the 2 doms and you are splitting the time equally for each dom.
| Metronome: |
click
click
click
click
...
You:
dom dom
dom dom
dom dom
dom dom
...

Another 4 minutes...
8th Exercise
Repeat with one click 2 doms and with another 2 taks.
| Metronome: |
click
click
click
click
...
You:
dom dom
tak tak
dom dom
tak tak
...

Another 4 minutes.
So, we practiced today how to play the "eighth note". Again make sure that you are repeating with the metronome at the same time. Again you can use your ears and listen to decide if you are playing in the same place or not.
Play together as long as you need to in order to feel a "togetherness" with the metronome. Its very, very important. You need to practice this exercises minimum two times a day.
See you in the next lesson!
